Chapter 3

Husam took a deep breath. How would it sound to this woman, that he’d been caught in the princess’s bedchambers? Lizzie would endeavor to flee from him again. She was already trying to think of how to do so. He could tell from her frightened posture—the way she watched him like he was a snake recoiling to strike, and she was waiting for the right moment to dart out of his path. So when she found out what he’d been condemned for, he was certain she’d bolt for the door again.

He’d wished his sister could have helped him with her. He certainly didn’t know how to handle a woman like this one who both was intrigued with him and feared him. He crouched in front of her, leaned forward and touched her arm with his hand, sending a spark of warmth through him like a flicker of white-hot flame.

She scooted away from him to give them both room. His lips turned up. “I’ve not been close to a woman in a very long time.”

She hastily rose from couch.

He tsked. “I’m not going to hurt you. I like the way you smell, like flowers and some kind of fruit.”

“Peach...my bath wash.” She frowned. “Tell me how you ended up in the bottle.”

He rose to his full height and crossed his arms. “I was found in the Sultan’s daughter’s private chambers.”

“Ohhhh.”

“Do not look at me that way with that wrinkle in your forehead, and your chin tilted upward as if in saying I’m guilty of the crime.”

Lizzie stared at him, her mouth slightly ajar. “What crime?”

“She tricked me into her chambers.”

“Her chambers, or her bed?” Lizzie shouldn’t have asked. It was none of her business, and yet curiosity got the best of her. If he was a prince, and the Sultan’s daughter was a princess, what was the trouble? Had he not wanted Husam to marry her? And if not, why not? Was he a bit of a rogue?

“I was found in her bed.”

She laughed. She couldn’t help it. How had he been tricked into the woman’s bed? Sounded like some guy line to her.

“I was drugged, and left on the princess’s bed,” he said as though he had read her mind. “But worse than that, her brother had been murdered and my sword was found in his lifeless body. Because I had been the Sultan’s choice to marry the princess, he condemned me to a life in the bottle rather than have me beheaded.”

Lisa touched her neck and swallowed hard. Barbaric. But if the Sultan had been so angry that Husam had killed his son, why let him live? She didn’t believe it was just because the Sultan preferred Husam marrying his daughter. “Why did he decide to give you imprisonment for an eternity, and not have you killed?”

“Maybe he suspected the prince who vied for her hand also, was behind the tragic killing. I intend to...” Again he quit speaking, as if there was something he wanted to say, but couldn’t.
